Answered Prayer

Loading mentions Retweet

A few weeks ago I was chatting with a friend of mine who owns a local business. Times have been tough recently and he has barely been making enough money to pay his rent and taxes let alone to buy food for his wife and children. He works long hours for little money and rarely allows himself any time off.  Our conversation moved onto more spiritual things, to which his response like so many Albanians was to shurg his shoulders, point to the sky and say 'He Know's' meaning 'God knows'.  I decided to take the conversation a step further and went to explain that I believed God does indeed 'know' about all our sitiuation but more importantly God cares about our situations. I told my friend that I pray for him and would like to pray very specifically about some of his problems. He couldn't believe what I was saying, 'You'd pray for me'! he kept repeating.
His major worry was his business and paying his bills so  I told him I would  pray specifically for help with his business and for things to improve finacially for him.

Today I visited my friend again and he greeted me with a warm smile, a big hug and kisses on both cheeks, as we went for coffee he called his friend over and told him - 'pray for him like you prayed for me, he needs you to pray for him, I told him you'd pray for him'. My friend went on to explain that since I had prayed, his business had got better and his finacial problems has eased a little. He was amazed that the prayers had worked.

Next week we have a team from England with us and we'll be visiting my friend and lots of others like him in Shkoze who are depsperate to find something to believe ion, something real, something that can help them in their troubled lives.

We'll eagerly await more answerd prayers as we ask God to help and put ourselves in place to serve him wherever we are.

2010 New Changes

Loading mentions Retweet

January is the time when many westerners make plans or 'resolutions' - things they want to do or achieve in the year ahead. It usually involves changing an area of life that they are not happy with. In January many people start the year with the resolution, 'This year I will lose weight' or 'This year I will get fit'. After over 6 years of living in Albania I've realised that most western resolutions are quite selfish and written from a position of relative wealth and luxury.

For Albanians in the North of the country their new year  has forced them to make big unwanted and unwelcome changes in their lives. For over 10 days Northern Albania has been subject to heavy rainfall which along with snow melt from the surrounding mountains and neighboring countries has caused extensive flooding. Hundreds of families have had to evacuate their homes as the flood waters have risen. The scenes on the news show people using boats to get their precious possessions out of their homes to save them from the flood waters.

As I write this more heavy rains are still forecast in the North and the government have declared  a state of emergency. The dams from the Northern Hydro Electric plants are near to bursting- KESH the national Electricity company are being accused of gross incompetence and mis management and rumors of them keeping the water levels too high to sell electricity abroad - are filling the news reports.

Albania is a poor country and hard pressed to cope with disasters like this but under the circumstances the emergency services are doing a  wonderful job.

Churches in Tirana have been praying for Angels to hold together the dam walls against the rising water- watching the images on the news its easy to see how the dams could crack and break and what devastation that would cause.

So amidst all the January changes and plans for 2010 spare a though and prayer for those in the North of Albania whose lives have already changed due to this national, natural disaster

Disa kapituj nga Bibla per tu mbushur me fjalen e Perendise jane gjithmone te nevojshme per nje fillim dite sa me te mire.

The Best laid Plans

Loading mentions Retweet

No day at Drita is ever the same,  some days are back to back with meetings and visits and other days, well, nothing seems to work out as planned. This is life in Albania but more specifically this is life in Shkoze, we just have to roll with it and deal with it other wise high blood pressure and tension gets the better of us.

This morning  my day was pretty well mapped out, I knew what was going to happen- or so I thought. The plan was to vist the Roma community with the Medical  Project Nurses. There is a 40 day old baby there, 'Sami' who we are very concerened about. A time was set for the meeting and I cycled up to help the nurses- mainly just carrying their bags and chatting to people. I think actually this is what ministry is, carrying bags and chatting to people. However as I cycled up the hill to Shkoze the nurses phoned to say thye had actually visitied the Roma community and hour earlier than planned so I needn't worry.

That gave me the morning free to get on with letter writing, emails and preparation work. We want to buy some new computers for the church, our current ones are very old and its a wonder that they still function at all. All their software is copied and corrupt but its very hard to get decent genuine software here in Tirana. One shop had Windows 7 copies before it had been released anywhere.

I had a meeting set up for 2  o clock with one of the Roma leaders but he just didn't come. We have a room full of blankets for the community and I was needing his help to divide up  equally the blankets for each of the homes there.

right now I have four lads using the old computers, the mangava ladies clearing up after a few hours card making, and the english course about to begin

So my day has been waiting for people who aren't coming, to come and catching up with long over due admin,
but a good day all the same

Graham
